Supreme Court Hears Sambhal Jama Masjid Plea: Live Updates on Landmark Case
The Supreme Court is set to hear a petition from the Sambhal Jama Masjid Committee challenging a trial court’s order for a survey of the mosque. The suit claims the mosque was constructed after demolishing a pre-existing temple.
A bench led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar will preside over the case today.
The mosque’s management committee stated it approached the Supreme Court due to extraordinary circumstances, citing violence on November 24 following the survey order, which resulted in four fatalities.

The committee argued that the trial court’s decision was made without issuing prior notice and contravened the Places of Worship Act, 1991. They emphasized that the mosque, built in the 16th century, is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
The Masjid Committee also highlighted a troubling trend of surveys being ordered in cases of belated claims against mosques. It urged the Supreme Court to ensure such orders are not passed routinely without giving the defendants a chance to be heard, warning that such actions could incite communal tensions and disrupt societal harmony.
